The Poor Man’s BlockClock
The block height is a number that represents the total number of blocks in the blockchain, with each block containing a batch of transactions. As new blocks are added over time, the block height increases by one. This number serves as a measure of the blockchain's length.
You’re not poor if you don’t have $400 to buy a BlockClock, the real one.
Blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger that records transactions across multiple computers in such a way that the registered transactions cannot be altered retroactively. Each block in the blockchain contains a batch of transactions, and once a block is filled, it is added to the chain in chronological order.
The first block ever created is called the genesis block (block 0), and every subsequent block increases the height by 1. For example, block 1 is the second block, block 2 is the third, and so on.
In simple terms, block height is a way to count the blocks in the blockchain, starting from the very first one. It’s like counting steps as you walk up a staircase, with each step representing a new block.
